Horacio Astudillo de la Vega, proponent of "precision medicine"
Horacio Astudillo de la Vega, CEO of Nanopharmacia Group, is a specialist in genomic and molecular medicine who has dedicated years of study to "precision medicine," analyzing cancer patients' cells to determine personalized treatments through nanotechnology.
Dr. Astudillo de la Vega and his team emphasize that "precision medicine" is one of the most effective ways to combat cancer, a disease that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), will see 35 million new cases by 2050.
Who is Horacio Astudillo de la Vega?
Born in Tixtla, Guerrero, in 1968, Horacio Astudillo de la Vega has climbed various ranks to become the nanotechnology genius he is today.
In 1984, he graduated from the Higher School of Medicine at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), obtaining the title of Surgeon Midwife. In 1996, he earned his master's degree in Sciences with a specialization in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the IPN (CINVESTAV-IPN).
Later, in 2008, he received his Ph.D. in Sciences with a specialization in Molecular Biomedicine from the National School of Medicine and Homeopathy, also of the IPN (ENMyH-IPN).
Additionally, his career includes being a researcher at the Translational Research and Cell Therapy Laboratory Unit at the National Medical Center Siglo XXI of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) from 1997 to 2019.
He has also been a member of the National System of Researchers, a full professor at the Graduate School of Health at the Military Medical School of the University of the Army and Air Force of Mexico, among other positions that can be consulted on his LinkedIn profile.
As a result of his effort and work, he has been recognized with the Latin American Oncology Research Award "Aida Weiss Foundation" in 1999 and the Award for Best Work Presented at the CELL DEATH SOCIETY Congress in 1999 at the Queen College of Medicine in New York.
He also won the Best Poster Award in 2004 at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress in Vienna, Austria.
Currently, Horacio Astudillo de la Vega is CEO of Nanopharmacia Group, a multidisciplinary business group interconnected with the aim of improving the health of Mexicans (and foreigners) and applying nanotechnology to combat diseases, such as cancer.
Technology as an ally against Cancer
"Cancer has been a battle that is still not won," stated Dr. Horacio Astudillo de la Vega in an interview with the now-defunct Notimex in 2019, indicating that the path to curing an oncological disease lies in prevention, technology, and early diagnosis.
According to Astudillo de la Vega, "any oncological disease, regardless of the organ or tissue, if diagnosed at an early stage, has over an 80% chance of being cured, which is very encouraging."
Similarly, it is encouraging that, thanks to research over the past 25 years, significant progress has been made in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
When discussing timely diagnosis, it is necessary to mention molecular genetics, which can anticipate genetic susceptibility in patients who have not yet developed a disease, predict the disease and its potential clinical evolution. Most importantly, it can also predict which treatment will benefit the patient most with their type of cancer, as this disease is individual.
Today’s technology allows for a deeper understanding of the at-risk population and, when these groups acquire the disease, to evaluate the potential clinical evolution or consequences.
Simultaneously, technology allows for the genetic and molecular evaluation of which medications or therapies will benefit the patient the most, making cancer potentially curable.
For this diagnosis, a sample of saliva, blood, or cancerous tumor is sufficient, which is then studied through gene expression (which genes are active in that disease) via the genetic-molecular alterations of those genes and protein biomarkers found in the blood and/or tumor for diagnosis.
The result is obtained in less than a week; in some cases, it can be within 48 hours, depending on the type of test. As a result, it is possible to determine the most effective treatment for the detected abnormalities, also known as "precision medicine."
What is "precision medicine"?
Currently, "precision medicine" is emerging as a highly impactful therapeutic area in cancer medicine, which is a significant advancement in human history because it allows for the avoidance of side effects, such as those from chemotherapy, and maximizes therapeutic benefit.
This type of medicine helps define the genetic-molecular characteristics of each patient and establish the best treatment for each one. Thus, even if there are 10 patients of the same age, clinical stage, sex, and cancer type, the treatment will be personalized based on their diagnosis, seeking the most effective treatment for their tumor.
In the words of Horacio Astudillo de la Vega, "precision medicine" has had a positive impact on cancer patients, providing greater hope and better therapeutic success.
Moreover, in terms of health, "precision medicine" is a revolution, as it can also be used for other diseases, especially chronic-degenerative ones.
In Conclusion
Health is the new standard for humanity because, without health, there is nothing. For this reason, Nanopharmacia Group, led by Dr. Horacio Astudillo de la Vega, offers various supplements made with nanotechnology, which helps them be better absorbed by the body and enhance their effects.
We have already talked about how to strengthen the immune system and the diet diabetics should follow, but if you want to learn more about products designed to help mitigate the effects of diseases like cancer, you can discover Enikia, a supplement made with nanotechnology that integrates glycine, resveratrol, arginine, and cysteine in one product.
Or, if you want to explore the full range of products resulting from Horacio Astudillo de la Vega’s extensive research, you can visit the official Nanopharmacia Group website.
